Karchi Perlmann
Time Catcher #2666
Time Catcher #2666. September 2014. Time Catcher (AKA Santa Monica Light) is a fine art series that began in 2011 as a response to the contemplative and meditative energy of Santa Monica Beach, the neighborhood in which the photographer lived for many years. The idea of representing the essence of time during meditation where one attempts to disconnect from time is the very antitheses of "freezing the moment," photography's most intrinsic property.
Here, Karchi uses the simple mechanics of the camera to record a time continuum. It is achieved by time exposure and movement, which allows the photographer to unfreeze the moment in favor of catching thousands. With the advent of the latest digital camera technology Karchi was able to paint with time exposure in real time, carefully constructing the images at the time of creation. The end result is the painting of thousands of fragmented moments onto one contained field – in essence transforming the camera into a “time catcher.”
