Bobby McCardle, left, and Todd Reed await the beginning of the first of 3 games for the day. Reed lost his leg in 1991 while serving in the Army in northern Iraq when he stepped on a landmine, while McCardle, a Marine, lost his to an IED also in Iraq.
The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team was founded in March 2011 by David Van Sleet, an Arm veteran who had worked in prosthetics for the VA. Van Sleet founded the WWAST to help veteran amputees find outlets for activity and raise awareness of the skills of the injured. The WWAST has 24 team members, both active and retired military personnel, who lost limbs in active military situations. They travel all over the country playing games on a monthly basis.
