The Funeral for Eric Garner, Brooklyn, New York. July 2014. In Choke Hold's Wake. Family members of Eric Garner sit in a car while holding a sign showing pictures of Garner's life after his funeral Wednesday, July 23, 2014 in Brooklyn, N.Y. About a week before, Garner, who was questioned on a sidewalk for selling cigarettes, or "loosies," died in the Tompkinsville, Staten Island, neighborhood during an arrest after an NYPD officer placed Garner in a choke hold, and causing his death, according to a medical examiner, who said his death was a homicide caused by compression of the neck. In December, the officer accused in the homicide of Garner was cleared by a grand jury, sparking another round of protests across New York and echoed in other cities in the United States.
