Homosexual acts were decriminalized in 1979 in Cuba, but persecution of LGBT people persisted in the decades to follow. In the last ten years however, Cuba has become one of the most progressive countries in Central America and the Caribbean for gay rights. Though the nation still has a long way to go in eradicating homophobia, the visibility of LGBT people living openly in society is demonstrative of Cuba's progress towards equality.
