Where the ice is thin
Where the Ice is Thin. During my project in Greenland I met Uunartoq, 70, who lives in a remote settlement in Northern Greenland with 250 settlers and their 500 sled dogs. He is one of the last true hunters trying to lead a traditional lifestyle – subsistence hunting.
Due to climate change, hunters struggle with shorter winters, unpredictable weather and thinner ice. They can only dog sled for a few months each year and have had to adapt to become fishermen. Uunartoq is concerned about the future. The young generation is moving to towns and has already abandoned a number of settlements.
