The Micheels House (#14), from the book "After You Left/They Took It Apart (Demolished Paul Rudolph Homes). In 2007 I photographed three homes designed by the controversial Modernist Paul Rudolph, just days prior to their demolitions. The resulting images capture a state of Modernist architecture few people have witnessed, revealing the grace of these homes as they stood in defiance of neglect and “progress”. Six years later, the book has finally been published and Rudolph's work is still in jeopardy.
"After You Left / They Took It Apart (Demolished Paul Rudolph Homes)" addresses the beauty and importance of these iconic homes (and Modernist architecture as a whole), as well as the personal and cultural frustration over their loss. These photographs document the more abstract and intangible qualities of architecture, as well as the changing American architectural landscape.
"After You Left/They Took It Apart" was published in November 2013 by Columbia College Chicago Press/University of Chicago Press. Recent exhibitions include Reform Gallery in LA, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Lewis Glucksman Gallery in Ireland, Art Basel Miami, etc.
