Established in the early ’60s, safety rest-areas, part of the U.S. interstate road system, are managed by individual state governments’ departments of transportation; hence the disparate philosophies, designs and conditions. Most now sit abandoned; having lost their function, they become all about form, symmetry, emptiness and beauty, confronting their own meaninglessness in relation to the landscape.
