Damascus, Syria, one for the article “War Pierces Damascus' Bubble of Denial,” June 23, 2012. The Syrian army held funeral services at the Tishreen Military Hospital for 42 government soldiers killed in fighting against insurgents. By summer 2012, 100 Syrian soldiers were dying each week.

Syrian Refugee Crisis, personal work, March 2012. A 9-year-old Syrian child named Shadi was injured by shrapnel from an unidentified explosion while crossing the border to Lebanon. In spring 2012, there were less than 10,000 Syrian refugees in the country. By the end of the year, that number surged to more than 170,000.
