Evi has been living at Yayasin Bina Lestari, a private shelter, Brebas, Central Java, Indonesia for more than two years. She was fifteen when she began to experience hallucinations. Her family pays for her platform bed and for the Islamic based spiritual treatments. Medications are not used. One of two legal shelters in the area is a foundation under the local Brebas department of religion. There are no mental hospitals or clinics close enough to access. Kyai Samsul Ma' arif who inherited Kyai Samsul family shelter from his father, a family-run a private shelter, Brebas, Central Java, Indonesia, admits that he does not know how to help many of the men and women under his care.
