This Land / More Than Peanuts: A farmer's daughter gets awakened to George Washington Carver's legacy
Cannaday Chapman combines watercolor and digital illustration to create artwork to accompany writer Latria Graham's recurring This Land column in each issue of Garden & Gun. As Graham's column often centers people of color in relationship to the environment and natural world, so do Chapman's illustrations. In 2025, Chapman depicted Graham's visit to the Museum of Infinite Outcomes in Knoxville, stargazing in Monte Sano Nature Preserve in Huntsville, Alabama, Mother Emanuel church in Charleston, a Puerto Rican cloud forest, Graham's memory of growing up picking black walnuts, and a visit to a national monument site dedicated to George Washington Carver.
