Ava An
Flowers, Cake and Burnt Candle
Vanitas, the still-life tradition, reflects the emptiness and futility of finite life. Yet through this work I seek to reveal the wonder of living. Flowers may seem beautiful, but up close their veins, hairs, stains, and thorns can feel strange or unsettling. I embrace this multiplicity as another form of beauty. On a sweet cake, flowers grow abundantly, while a bent candle burns itself out beside them.
