One of four panels commissioned by Riverhead Books Art Director Helen Yentus to celebrate the release of Ishmael H.Beah’s “Little Family”: A powerful novel about 5 young people in a conflict-scarred land, struggling to replace the homes they have lost with the one they have created together, in an abandoned airplane. This is an illustration of Elimane, the bookworm, who is as street-smart as he is wise, is lanky, likes to try to dress well (tattered shirtsleeves, well combed hair, shiny shoes), and is always reading or writing.
