Finding Marlowe. November 2014. Illustration for an article about Samuel B. Marlowe. The first licensed private detective West of the Mississippi. He was thought to have directly influenced some of the authors that originated the noir fiction genre. He also provided private security for some of the early Hollywood starlets when they attended jazz clubs on the wrong side of town.
