The Iridescence of Birds is a 40 page picture book about Matisse as a little boy, written by Patricia MacLachlan. Matisse was born in a gray northern town in France. To bring color and pattern to his life his mom hung red rugs on the walls and even on the dirt parlor floor, "so all the world looked red".
