A photographer who interrupted play for nearly seven minutes by stepping on the court in the middle of a US Open first-round match between Daniil Medvedev and Benjamin Bonzi has had his credential revoked for the remainder of the tournament, reports the New York Post. The interruption by the unnamed photographer led the umpire to award a first serve redo to Bonzi, infuriating Medvedev, who was facing match point at the time. After AI failed to generate an image of a Black surfer, filmmaker and agency creative director David Mesfin took matters, and technology, into his own hands. “When I searched…the program would end up giving me a white man with dark skin holding a board,” Mesfin tells Outside. “Black people, Black surfers, just weren’t part of the data set.” Enlisting the help of Pocstock, a BIPOC imagery database, and dozens of other creative agencies, Mesfin has begun Refacing the Future, a project that re-trains popular AI models.
