Legal Brief: Federal Court Orders New York to Pay Christian Photographer $225,000

A federal court has approved a $225,000 settlement in a case involving a Christian photographer from New York who challenged state laws she said forced her to express messages inconsistent with her religious beliefs. The case, Emilee Carpenter Photography v. James, had reached the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit but was sent back to the lower court following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling holding that the government cannot compel individuals to create speech that violates their beliefs.    Read the full Story >>

Art News: Famed David Bailey Portraits Discovered in 'Mint Condition'

David Bailey’s 1965 Box of Pin-Ups portfolio was a defining portrait of the swinging 60s, immortalizing stars of the era including, John Lennon,  Mick Jagger and model Jean Shrimpton. Now, notes The Guardian, the original proof copy of the landmark portfolio of 36 portraits has been discovered in the collection of the influential graphic designer David Hillman, who worked with Bailey. Since 2007, Dear Dave magazine has been supporting the publication of photographers and writers, and the publication’s fellowship program fosters “the continued conversation about the medium through idiosyncratic, and underrepresented work.” Three applicants will be chosen to have their portfolio featured in Dear Dave in a forthcoming issue. The 40 entrants who receive the highest ranking by the jury will have a portfolio in the fellowship archive on the Dear Dave website.
