Honor Roll: Astronomy Photographer of the Year Shortlist

The ZWO Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest — hosted by Royal Observatory Greenwich and BBC Sky at Night magazine — has released its 2025 shortlist, drawn from more than 5,580 entries submitted from all over the world. Among the nominees: Chinese photographer PengFei Chou’s image of the Sun during a solar prominence, with a plasma eruption that extended more than 310,000 miles into space. A North Carolina photographer, her son and a soon-to-be bride ended up in the hospital after their bridal shoot was interrupted by a surprise lightning storm on July 1, notes People. Brianna Pendley was taking bridal photos for Katie McDaniel ahead of her wedding this month, when a thunderstorm quickly broke out at Carvers Gap on Roan Mountain, near the Tennessee border. The group sheltered under trees, and “within literal milliseconds we were on the ground screaming because lightning had struck the tree/ground that we were under," the photographer noted.
