Passings: Polish Photojournalism Pioneer Tadeusz Rolke Dies at 96

Tadeusz Rolke, one of Poland’s most acclaimed postwar photographers, died in Warsaw on July 14 at the age of 96. “Renowned for his unmistakable directness and intensity of style that never left humor completely aside, Rolke excelled in documentary, fashion and portrait photography, chronicling the unique and the commodified as Poland rose from the ruins of World War Two, then decades later toppled communism and ventured into a new post-socialist reality,” notes TVP World.   Read the full Story >>

Industry News: US International Trade Commission Rules Insta360 Infringed on GoPro Patents

The US International Trade Commission has determined that Chinese camera company Insta360 has infringed on at least some of GoPro's patents, notes Engadget. A press release from GoPro notes that the determination specifically found that "Insta360 violated federal law by importing and selling in the United States products that infringe GoPro intellectual property.” The company also says the ITC's judge validated multiple patent claims related to its HyperSmooth video stabilization feature, though the patents notably weren't considered infringed.   Read the full Story >>

A shelter-in-place order launched a photo project that Teresa Meier will talk about at the next Protections event. “Being in lockdown brought with it a peculiar duality of rapid change and the suspension of time. I wanted to capture that feeling in the images as well as the experience of isolation by eliminating any trace of other beings beyond the walls of our home,” she notes. Art News: 2025 Prix Pictet Shortlist Announced

Prix Pictet, the prestigious photography award focusing on sustainability, announced its 2025 shortlist on July 10 at the Arles photo festival in France. The winner of this year’s prize will receive 100,000 Swiss francs (about $124,811) and will be announced on September 25, notes Wallpaper, which spotlights the 12 finalists: Takashi Arai, Marina Caneve, Tom Fecht, Balazs Gardi, Roberto Huarcaya, Alfredo Jaar, Belal Khaled, Hannah Modigh, Baudouin Mouanda, Camille Seaman, Laetitia Vançon, and Patrizia Zelano.   Read the full Story >>
