Books: The Secrets of an 1868 Photo of a Native American Girl

A scholar of 19th-century American photography, Martha A. Sandweiss undertook an effort to identify the people in an 1869 photograph made by Alexander Gardner in Fort Laramie Wyoming. The handwritten labels on the extant copies of the photograph identified the men in the image, including General William Tecumseh Sherman. A girl in the frame was simply called “Arapho.” As she explains at the Smithsonian, Sandweiss finally Identified her as  Sophie Mousseau. Leica’s newly launched the M11-P Safari rangefinder is a rare blend of adventure and sophistication, declares DIY Photography. The newest addition to Leica’s Safari series, the olive-green M11-P  features a 60-megapixel BSI CMOS image sensor, Leica’s Maestro III image processor, 14-bit DNG recording,  a rear 2.95-inch touchscreen, an electronically controlled focal plane shutter, up to 4.5 frames per second continuous shooting, and an ISO that ranges from 50 to 50,000, adds PetaPixel. Honor Roll: Winners of the World Food Photography Awards

Chinese photographer Xiaoling Li is the overall winner of the 2025 World Food Photography Awards sponsored by Bimi® for his image “The Elderly Having Delicious Food,” shot in Shuangliu Ancient Town in the Sichuan Province of China. Says the photographer: “The elderly ladies in the picture are ‘setting up a Dragon Gate formation.’ This is an expression used in China to refer to neighborhood friends coming together to chat, gossip and share stories. They eat the famous Sichuan snack ‘Spring rolls’. Food makes these people happy.”   Read the full Story >>

Follow-Up: Photographer Isaac Wright on Being Busted by the NYPD

As we noted  last week, photographer Isaac Wright, who goes by the name Drift and is known for scaling buildings and making images from vertiginous heights, was arrested by New York police at the recent opening of an exhibition of his work at the Robert Mann Gallery in Manhattan. Now Wright has opened up about the experience in an interview with Art News. “I have to be upfront and say that I’m tired of getting attention for the wrong reasons. If I was this prolific in any other field, like painting, sculpting, or any other type of photography, I would be so much more celebrated for my work,” Wright says.   Read the full Story >>
