Industry News: Sony Anticipates $682 Million Decrease in Operating Income Due to Tariffs

Sony’s fourth-quarter 2024 financial results reflect a 24% decline in year-over-year consolidated sales, though the company’s imaging-related segments held steady. Unfortunately, noted PetaPixel, the company also shared the anticipated impact of tariffs — a massive operating income reduction. Sony believes that tariff impacts will account for a staggering $682 million operating income reduction and expects net income attributable to Sony Group Corporation stockholders to decrease 13% compared to FY2024 — a yen $936 million reduction.   Read the full Story >>

Honor Roll: Lindokuhle Sobekwa Wins 2025 Deutsche Borse Prize

South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa, whose experimental work explores family ties, myth and post-apartheid life, has won the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation prize 2025, notes The Guardian. Sobekwa was awarded the £30,000 (about $40,000) prize, one of the most prestigious in the industry, at the Photographers’ Gallery in London yesterday for his book I Carry Her Photo With Me (MACK), which focuses on the life and disappearance of his half-sister, Ziyanda (see PPD’s 2024 post). Media Watch: News Publishers See a Surge of Facebook Engagement from Photo Posts

Facebook engagement came “roaring back” for news publishers in the first few months of 2025, according to a new report from social media tracking company NewsWhip. The study found engagement on Facebook has tripled year over year, and, notes Nieman Lab, many of the top-performing posts were photo features. Fox News and The New York Times were two of the biggest winners: Facebook engagement for The Times was up 3.5 times over 2024 and Fox News saw an increase of nearly 9 times its previous year numbers.
