After a year of war, tragedy and political division, the British Journal of Photography has revealed the 200 shortlisted images in the 2025 edition of its Portrait of Humanity award program, which, notes the BJP, “seeks to celebrate what unites us as individuals.” This year’s shortlist was selected by industry-leading judges, including Vogue Italia’s Alessia Glaviano, Open Eye Gallery’s Max Gorbatskyi, Ángel Luis González Fernández of PhotoIreland and Brazilian curator Ioana Mello.

Photographic activism has emerged as a dominant practice today, with photographers driven by the desire to change an inequity or injustice, underscored by the belief that societal changes are possible. However, notes educator, copyright lawyer and documentary photographer Michelle Bogre, activist images can also contribute to stereotypes and the notion of the “other.” Today’s photographers grapple with this duality. The 2025 edition of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner came with a series of norm-breaking changes: The scheduled host,comedian Amber Ruffin, was canceled after the association said it didn't want to focus on “the politics of division.” Also, notes The New York Times, President Donald Trump did not attend.
