Emerging in the aftermath of World War I, Surrealism responded to the disillusionment and trauma of the time, and its influence endures, notes New York City’s Robert Koch Gallery, which celebrates the centenary of Surrealism with the exhibition “Surrealism in Photography: 1920s - 1980s” through March 29. Drawn from the galley’s own holdings, the exhibition features work by American, British, Czech, French, Hungarian and Mexican photographers, including Man Ray, Ruth Bernard, Jan Saudek, Manual Alvarez Bravo, Istvan Kerney and others.

A number of artists have accused Britain’s National Portrait Gallery of nepotism for featuring an exhibition by makeup artist-turned celebrity photographer Zoe Law (through March 2), notes The Guardian. Law was married to Andrew Law, a hedge fund manager, and their trust, the Law Family Charitable Foundation is listed as a key donor toward the NPG’s £41.3-million refurbishment. Zoe Law resigned as a trustee in June last year amid their divorce.)

Originally from the UK, Aria Shahrokhshahi began photographing in Ukraine in 2019 and started volunteering there after the war broke out in 2022, working for the NGOs to rebuild houses and helping children who live close to the frontline. But, notes the British Journal of Photography, he insists his photographic work is not about war. “I’m not a war photographer and I don’t want to be. It was just a place I was photographing, and the people I built a connection with happened to be at war,” he says.

Syria’s transitional government has condemned the killing of a photographer who had been working for state news agency SANA since before last month’s ouster of longtime strongman Bashar al-Assad. The body of photographer Ibrahim Ajaj was found in the central city of Hama, reports The Frontier Post, an English-language newspaper. Ajaj’s killing marks the first assassination of a journalist who had worked for state media under al-Assad’s rule, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. See also: PetaPixel.
