LenseCulture recently announced the 25 winners of its 2024 Emerging Talent Awards. “From intimate stories to community tales, each of these photographers provides a compelling perspective on the times we are living in, spanning our shared struggles to the collective joys that pull us through,” notes the site. As part of the contest, each of its jury members also selected one photographer to be awarded special distinction. Among those singled out is Ramona Jingru Wang of the U.S., selected by Noa Lin, assistant editor of Aperture.

The Supreme Court on Friday appeared likely to uphold a law that would effectively ban social media platform TikTok in the United States, reports NBC News. The nine justices on the conservative-majority court heard oral arguments from lawyers for TikTok, some of its users and the Biden administration. Although the justices did not appear convinced by TikTok's free speech arguments, there remains some uncertainty over how the court will handle the case, especially with President-elect Donald Trump taking office a day after the Jan. 19 deadline for the law to take effect, adds NBC.

The new year has already provided a coms surprise with Comet G3, an icy visitor from the Oort cloud now approaching its perihelion and getting brighter, notes DIY Photography. It is currently falling toward the Sun, and if it survives its solar encounter it could outshine Venus in the night sky, adds PetaPixel. It could even be visible in the daytime. On January 13, it will reach perihelion, only 13.5 million kms from the sun. As it approaches perihelion, it shines bright at Mag 1.6. It is predicted to reach a peak brightness of Mag -4.5 during its perihelion.
