In Focus: Capturing a Landscape of Lava

Photographer Vilhelm Gunnarsson, who works for the Icelandic newspaper Visir, has covered every volcanic eruption that on the island since 2000. Most recently, notes My Modern Met, this meant racing to document a nearly two-mile lava fissure that opened up in the Sundhnúka crater. Gunnarsson's press access allowed him to get close to the action in November when the lava engulfed a parking lot near the iconic Blue Lagoon, one of Iceland’s most visited tourist spots.   Read the full Story >>

Honor Roll: The Royal Society Publishing Photography Contest

An aerial image showing young sharks hunting has been named the winner of the 2024 Royal Society Publishing Photography Competition. Photographer Angela Albi, a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Germany, was aided by drone pilot August Paul in capturing the dynamics between four juvenile blacktip reef sharks and a school of hardyhead silversides  in the shallow waters of the Maldives. “I use drones to capture behavior from above, focusing on whether the sharks coordinate during their hunts,” says Albi.   Read the full Story >>

Honor Roll: Adriana Loureiro Fernandez Wins the 2024 W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography

Venezuelan photographer Adriana Loureiro Fernandez is the recipient of the $30,000 W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography for her project "Paraiso Perdido," or "Paradise Lost," which she calls "an ongoing visual chronicle of Venezuela's collapse."
