Legal Brief: 13 States and D.C. Sue TikTok for Harming Children and Teens

Thirteen states and the District of Columbia have filed lawsuits against TikTok, saying that the short-form video app is designed to be addictive to children and teens and harms their mental health. The lawsuits stem from a national investigation into TikTok, which was launched in March 2022 by a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general from a number of states, including New York, California, Kentucky and New Jersey. All of the complaints were filed in state courts. At the heart of each lawsuit, notes AP, is the TikTok algorithm, which powers the app’s “For You” feed with content tailored to people’s interests.   Read the full Story >>

As we noted recently, Eikoh Hosoe, one of Japan's most important post-war photographers, died on Sept. 16 at age 91. Art News: Historic Photo of an Interracial Couple Goes to Auction

What is believed to be the first American photograph of a romantically posed interracial couple will go to auction on October 26. The anonymous daguerreotype, taken around 1850-1855, depicts a white woman and an African American or mixed-race man in an amorous pose, notes Fine Books & Collections Magazine. The image is one of the highlights of the American Historical Ephemera and Early Photography  sale at Freeman’s | Hindman’s Cincinnati salesroom and has an estimate of $30,000 - $50,000.   Read the full Story >>
