Social News: YouTube Says It's 'Not Hiding the Skip Button' on Ads

Some YouTube users have observed the platform making it harder to skip ads in recent days. On Reddit, a user reported seeing black rectangles over the skip button on desktop instead of the expected countdown timer,  while Android Police reported not seeing a countdown to skip on mobile. But YouTube tells The Verge it isn’t removing the skip button. Rather, it’s just changing some elements of how ads are displayed, “reducing elements on the ads player” so that “viewers can engage more deeply with the ad through a cleaner experience.”   Read the full Story >>

Social News: FTC Finds that Social Media Sites Engage in 'Vast Surveillance' of Users

A study by the Federal Trade Commission has found that many social media sites and streaming services engage in "vast surveillance of consumers in order to monetize their personal information." This surveillance is aimed not only at adult users, but also children and teens, according to the study, which was conducted over four years. Passings: Royal Photographer Anwar Hussein Dies at 85

Photographer Anwar Hussein, renowned for his iconic images of the British royal family, died on Sept. 23 at age 85. Born in Chunya, Tanganyika, then a British colony and now known as Tanzania, Hussein went on to become "the longest-serving photographer on the royal roster, taking photos of the family for more than 50 years" and is credited with helping to create a more informal style of royal photos, notes People. Exhibitions: The Pioneering French Photojournalist Janine Niepce

A new exhibition looks back at the work of Janine Niépce, one of the country’s first female photojournalists (and a distant relative of a founding father of photography, Nicéphore Niépce).
