Nikon was founded nearly 107 years ago and has been ubiquitous in the photography space for much of that time, but the company is not far removed from nearly ruinous financial troubles, notes PetaPixel: In the past decade or so, Nikon’s profit margins have ranged from a high mark of $722 million in 2012 to a negative $324 million just three years ago. Through shrewd decisions and great new Nikon Z cameras and lenses, Nikon has safely moved from the brink, even been buying companies—including the purchase RED Digital Cinema for a $85 million.

Elephants in Sri Lanka killed at least 169 people in 2023, according to the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society, a conservation group in the country. But in the same period, humans killed 476 elephants. Federico Borella, an Italian photographer whose work focuses on environmental issues spent time in Sri Lanka last year documenting the mortal and material fallout human and elephant interactions drive by mankind’s encroachment into areas inhabited by elephants. His work there is part of a larger project on deforestation and urbanization, notes CNN.

In the entertainment industry, the Pandora’s box of AI has likely already been unleashed, declares The Hollywood Reporter, noting that behind closed doors most corners of production, from writers’ rooms to VFX departments, have embraced generative AI tools. For every project that has faced blowback for using AI in some part of the production pipeline—among them the horror film Late Night With the Devil, which stirred controversy with its use of AI-created graphics—there are dozens more that have quietly adopted the technology.

New York City-based artist Avion Pearce is the winner of the 2024 Aperture Portfolio Prize for a series titled “In the Hours Between Dawn," which, notes the organization, “explores photography’s potential to chart the interplay between time, the body, and Brooklyn’s transformation.” Born in Flatbush, Brooklyn, to Guyanese parents, Pearce has been interested since childhood in beauty and the cultivation of a space, notes Aperture. Pearce will be featured in Aperture’s upcoming Summer issue and will receive a $3,000 cash prize.
