Francisco Clemente, 27, built up a large social-media following with images of migrants reaching Spain in small boats and became known in the media as a defender of arrivals from Africa. But now, reports The Telegraph, the human rights photographer once employed by the Red Cross has been arrested for exploiting migrants crossing the Mediterranean. According to an investigation by Spain’s Guardia Civil police force, Clemente leveraged the contacts he gained to extort families anxious to learn about the fate of their relatives. He was part of a gang that allegedly charged up to €10,000 to send a corpse home.

World Photography Organization Tuesday March 26, 2024
The World Photography Organization has announced the winner and the shortlist for the 2024 Alpha Female Award, which celebrates images created by women in photography entering the Sony World Photography Awards Open competition. The winner is Catherine Wang of the United States for an image depicting the customs and styles of a generational divide. The award empowers female photographic talent by placing their works centre stage on an international platform, notes the WPO.

The €10,000 Photographer Grant from the Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation is awarded to a young professional photographer eager to undertake a documentary photography project in France or abroad, focusing on social, economic, political, or cultural subjects, notes L’Oeil de la Photographie. Applicants must be no older than 35 years old as of December 31, 2024; must be able to submit their application in French; and must have already completed and published at least two documentary projects in print and/or online publications, in a book, or in an exhibition catalog. Deadline for applications: Wednesday, June 16.
