An explosive star event is expected to appear in the night sky anytime between now and September, and it promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime celestial sight, notes CNN. A nova—the sudden, brief explosion from a collapsed star known as a white dwarf—will occur in the Milky Way’s Corona Borealis, or Northern Crown constellation, which is located between the Boötes and Hercules constellations. Once the nova peaks in brightness, it will be as if a new star has appeared — one that’s visible for a few days without any equipment.

“I was aware that autism is a spectrum, but I wasn’t aware of how broad a spectrum it is, not until I got to meet the families and to know individual kids and their characteristics. That’s really when I discovered that most representations of autistic people are really narrow.” So says Manchester, UK-based photographer Harley Bainbridge, who spent time with one family to learn, and document, the reality of autism. Now, notes the British Journal of Photography, she’s worked with the family to turn her project into a book.

Lexar’s new SL500 Portable SSD is an extremely compact 2TB drive designed for content creators, including iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max owners who want to record high-quality Apple ProRes video at 60 frames per second. The device sports a USB 3.2 Gen2x2 design, meaning that its performance on Mac devices is half its theoretical maximum, notes PetaPixel. For USB 3.2 Gen2x2 devices, the SL500 promises read speeds up to 2,000 MB/s and write speeds up to 1,800 MB/s. The SSD’s footprint is barely larger than a credit card and not much thicker.

Smithsonian magazine has revealed the 60 finalists in its 21st annual photographer contest, chosen from more than 30,000 submissions from 128 countries and territories and spread across six categories—Travel, People, American Experience, Natural World, Drone/Aerial, and Artistic. “These photographs capture a wide range of emotions, from the tragedy of the Covid-19 pandemic to the joys of everyday life,” notes the magazine. The finalists are in the running for the Grand Prize award. You can also vote for the Readers’ Choice award.
