Art News: Getty Museum Makes Nearly 88,000 More Images Free to Use

The J. Paul Getty Museum has expanded its free digital archive, including nearly 88,000 new photos and images of artworks. “In other words, you can freely download all these images on their Open Content database under Creative Commons Zero (CC0) and use them as you please,” notes DIY Photography. You can “copy, modify, distribute and perform the work, even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission, notes the museum, which  launched its Open Content program in 2013.   Read the full Story >>

Books: Inside Vietnam's Shadowy 'Click Farms'

Last year, British photographer Jack Latham spent a month in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, documenting some of the shadowy enterprises that help clients artificially boost online traffic and social media engagement in the hope of manipulating algorithms and user perceptions. Since the 2000s, such “click farms” have exploded in number, particularly in Asia, notes CNN. Latham’s new book Beggar’s Honey  provides “rare insight into the workshops that hire low-paid workers to cultivate likes, comments and shares,” adds the news site.   Read the full Story >>

Industry News: Lensrentals Acquires BorrowLenses From Shutterfly

Lensrentals has acquired BorrowLenses from Shutterfly, further solidifying its position as the top online photo, video, audio, and lighting equipment rental company in the United States. BorrowLenses, headquartered in San Carlos, CA, was previously acquired by Shutterfly in 2013, notes PetaPixel, which reports in a separate post  that the BorrowedLenses brands will be no more and that its California location will be shut down. “Lensrentals is not acquiring employees or locations as part of the acquisition,” noted the company in a statement.   Read the full Story >>

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund will host a virtual award ceremony on Thursday, March 26, to honor recipients of the 2023 W. Eugene Smith Fund grant, fellowship and finalist award. The program will include presentations from 2023 grant recipient Irina Werning, who will discuss her winning project “Las Pelilargas,” Since 2006, Werning has been photographing women in Argentina with long hair, reflecting a blend of South American cultures and indigenous traditions.
