Social News: Instagram's New Safety Tools; YouTube's New Moderation Tweaks

Instagram has unveiled new safety tools aimed at protecting creators from unwanted interactions, notes PetaPixel. The automated detection tools are aimed at helping creators moderate fake followers and spam in bulk, according to Instagram. Meanwhile, The Verge reports that YouTube has introduced a new moderation tool for creators that allows them to pause comments, preventing any new comments from being added to videos while preserving those that have already been posted. Media Watch: National Geographic Will End Newsstand Sales

It’s the end of an era in publishing: National Geographic magazine will no longer be for sale on newsstands starting next year, reports AP. A spokesman for the magazine says Nat Geo will focus on its digital product and offer special editions on newsstands. Subscribers will still get a printed copy each month. Newsstand sales account for a small percentage of the magazine’s monthly circulation of just below 1.8 million copies. Control of National Geographic has changed twice in the past decade, first in a sale to 20th Century Fox before being acquired by the Walt Disney Corp. in 2019. Passings: Gerry Cranham, Pioneering Sports Photographer, Dies at 94

Gerry Cranham, a sports photographer who pioneered several techniques, including the use of remote cameras, died on Oct. 20 age 94, notes The Telegraph. “He was as adept at seeing the beauty in an anonymous fell runner jumping a drystone wall in Cumbria as capturing the greats of the 1960s and 70s, such as Muhammad Ali, Olga Korbut, Billie-Jean King, Lester Piggott, Bobby Moore and Arnold Palmer,” adds The Guardian.
