On Nov. 29 the Projections photo presentation event will feature three finalists from Photolucida’s “Critical Mass” program: Sarah Hoskins’s series "The Homeplace" is a visual record of people and place in a changing American landscape; Rudy Roye’s “When Living is a Protest” examines the suffering of everyday people; and Daniel Sackheim’s "UNSEEN" explores isolated fragments of subjects once there but now gone. Surfer Friday November 24, 2023
Legendary surf photographer Mike Moir, known for his pioneering close-up action shots of the sport, died on Nov. 13 at age 77, reports Surfer magazine. Moir “grew up surfing during the longboard era of the late fifties and early sixties before starting to mess around with a camera pointed seaward, primarily in and around the Huntington/Newport wave zones,” notes Beach Grit. He went on to become a staff photographer for Surfer magazine and later released what BG calls an “epoch-defining” book titled The Eighties at Echo Beach. The book underscored surfing’s cultural impact.

In the summer of 1960, photographer Ormond Gigli shot 40 models posing in the window frames of brownstones across East 58th Street on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Two more women stand on the sidewalk, next to a silver Rolls-Royce. Gigli was working on spec, in an effort to memorialize the buildings, which stood directly across the street from his home studio. He couldn't know that the image he created would become one of the most collected photographs in the history of the medium, notes The New York Times.

Adobe is working on a new audio tool designed to break apart different layers of sound within a single recording, notes The Verge. The tool is called Project Sound Lift, and it can use AI to separate elements like applause from the sound of someone’s voice: All you have to do is import an audio file into the application, then choose which sound you want the tool to filter out. There are other tools with similar capabilities, such as Supertone’s Clear and Goyo’s voice separator, but they only offer options to split up and tweak the file’s ambience.
