After pressing pause on its Honors of Excellence program in 2022, the WPPI is now accepting entries for its new Icon International Photography Awards. When the former contest was shuttered, the directors of the competition, Jerry Ghionis and Melissa Ghionis, took it upon themselves to create the Icon Awards autonomously. However, the awards gala, print judging and gallery will continue to be hosted during the WPPI show in Las Vegas, March 5-7 2024.

A beloved Washington, D.C., photographer who vanished on Labor Day has been found dead, and now a Pennsylvania man is charged with murder in connection with his death, reports People. Joe Shymanski, 51, of Huntingtown, Md., was reported missing from his home, and police have arrested Brandon Holbrook, 47, of Reedsville, Pa, on charges of first- and second-degree murder and first-degree assault. No motive has been released. Shymansky was known for selling photographs—images of Star Wars Lego figures featuring socially conscious themes—at D.C.’s Eastern Market. The Washington Post has more.

Can the world get enough pictures of bears gorging on salmon in Alaska? The answer is no. In Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve, brown bears have returned to Brooks Falls, where they feed on salmon from July to September in preparation for the coming winter, notes The Atlantic, which features a portfolio on images documenting the feast by Getty Images photographer John Moore. The famed fishing bears are celebrated each September during Fat Bear Week, with a tournament organized by the National Park Service.
