Stargazers and photographers in the northern half of the world may be able to view a brightening comet shortly: Amateur astronomer Hideo Nishimura discovered the comet on Aug. 11, capturing the celestial object with a long exposure on a standard digital camera, notes Mashable. The comet, passing closest to the sun around Sept. 18, is officially dubbed C/2023 P1 and "Nishimura" for short. Meanwhile, DIY Photography reports that on October 14, the moon will pass in front of the sun, and an annular ‘ring of fire’ solar eclipse will be visible over much of the United States and Central and South America.

Along with her Renaissance World Tour, Beyonce is shopping a new visual album to studios and streamers that was directed by photographer and filmmaker Nadia Lee Cohen. The film is in line with Beyoncé’s other visual albums "Lemonade" and "Black Is King," but also “weirder,” a source tells Above the Line. “It’s a visual album movie, but it’s like an art film,” notes one person. Cohen has shot music videos with Tyler the Creator, Katy Perry and other artist and worked with brands including Adidas, Balenciaga, Gucci, and Valentino.

Along with Starling Lab, an academic research lab based at Stanford University and the University of Southern California, media conglomerate Thomson Reuters and Canon have developed a new proof of concept pilot program to certify the authenticity of digital images. The companies say the program can “ease concerns about content’s legitimacy.” The program involves a method for embedding information into an image at the time of capture that is preserved through the entire editing and publication process.

Photographer Ana María Arévalo Gosen was j16 when she decided to terminate her pregnancy. “Horrifying” and “traumatic” are the words she uses to describe the procedure, which is punishable by up to six years in prison in her native Venezuela, where many young women, like Gosen, have few reproductive choices, notes the British Journal of Photography. Gosen began exploring this difficult topic in her photo essay “Grandmothers at 30,” which was recently awarded the Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award.
