The Nova Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine collapsed early on June 6, forcing more than 1,400 people to flee their homes and threatening vital water supplies as flooding inundated the region. Kyiv and Moscow have traded accusations over the Russian-occupied dam's destruction, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky describing the situation as "an environmental bomb of mass destruction.” CNN features a photo report on the catastrophe with images from news photographers including Evgeniy Maloletka (AP).

After reports surfaced last week on the Fred Miranda forums stating that Zeiss was leaving the photography industry, the company put out a statement saying it has not withdrawn from photography. “The company says they’ve faced some challenges during the pandemic, as every company has. They also talk about their continued ventures into smartphone camera modules,” notes DIY Photography. Of course, adds DIYP, Olympus denied it was getting out of the photography market, too, before ultimately admitting it was getting out of the photography business.

Acclaimed backyard astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy took to Twitter recently to address accusations that his images are “fake”—accusations, notes PetaPixel, that come from people who believe that the Earth is flat and those who think the International Space Station does not actually exist. The controversy arose after McCarthy posted an image he made showing the ISS crossing the Moon. “I absolutely do not support or agree with being rude, or verbally attacking people who say space is fake. They’re wrong, yeah, but name-calling is contributing to the problem, not the solution,” he noted.
