It’s a real, actual photo—no Photoshopping or AI was used in its creation, notes Digital Camera World. But its composition has left viewers scratching their heads—the photo went viral as an unintended optical illusion involving a color split down the middle. Ohno originally entered the image in the Nature in Japan photo contest, where it received an honorable mention.

The title of photographer Kyle Weeks’s project “Good News” harkens back to his childhood in Namibia, when he would watch his father react to a “constant stream of negative stories” in the news. The new work is the culmination of the six years that Weeks spent photographing in Ghana, beginning in 2016. “The vibrancy of his images – especially the resplendent and effusive portraits of Ghana’s youth – impart a sense of timelessness while gesturing towards the future, one that is hopeful and expansive,” nots AnOther.

BigPicture Natural World Photography Competition Thursday June 22, 2023
The winners of the 2023 BigPicture Natural World Photography Competition have been announced. The Grand Prize goes to photographer Corey Arnold for his photo of an American black bear who is making an appearance on the back porch of a retired couple living on the outskirts of Asheville, North Carolina. The photo comes from Arnold’s “Cities Gone Wild” series, which focuses on wildlife inhabiting urban areas. This is the ninth annual BigPicture Natural World Photography Competition, notes The Atlantic.
