Art News: Visual AIDS Executive Director Esther McGowan Joins Aperture

Esther McGowan, the current director of Visual AIDS — an art nonprofit dedicated to supporting the work of artists living with HIV/AIDS and those lost to AIDS-related causes — will depart her role at the end of May to join Aperture as its director of development. At Aperture, McGowan will spearhead a capital fundraising campaign as the photography-focused nonprofit prepares to move to a new, permanent home in Manhattan's Upper West Side in 2024. “With an accomplished history of building engagement and support for artists and mission-driven arts organizations, Esther joins Aperture at a pivotal moment in our institution’s history, says Aperture executive director Sarah Meister.   Read the full Story >>

State of the Art: Charity Allegedly Uses AI Images in Ads

The use of AI is becoming more and more commonplace, in political advertising, for instance, and, it appears, in ads for a charity: PetaPixel reports that  ads for the U.K.-based Charity Right immediately caught the eye of the users on Reddit because they appear to have been created using artificial intelligence image generators. “I don’t mind AI art, but if you can’t get an actual photo of a hungry child, how can we believe that any donations are actually being used to feed them?,” wrote one Redditor. Trending: Photographer Loses $40K Worth of Gear in SpaceX Launch

A photographer who covered the launch of the SpaceX Starship on April 20 lost six of his cameras after they were hit of pieces of concrete, reports NBC2. The photographer, Scott Schilke, regularly covers rocket launches for Spacenews. “It turned out Elon [Musk] was wrong that the concrete could handle one more launch without any protection,” Schilke said. “The GoPros are destroyed, I did get the SD card out of it and it’s pretty amazing footage.” While the SpaceX rocket blew up in air, the explosive nature of the launch at ground level has drawn heightened scrutiny, notes Reuters.   Read the full Story >>
