Art News: San Francisco Art Institute Files for Bankruptcy

The San Francisco Art Institute, one of the nation’s oldest and most esteemed art schools, has filed for bankruptcy, Art News reports. The school, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2021, had been plagued by financial troubles in the years leading up to the pandemic; in 2020, the school announced it would cease admissions and degree-granting programs due to decreased enrollment and mounting debts. Among its alumni: Kehinde Wiley, Joan Brown, Richard Diebenkorn, Enrique Chagoya, and Annie Leibovitz.   Read the full Story >>

In Focus: Documenting Korean Sex Trade Built for American GIs

The term “comfort women” typically describes Korean and other Asian women forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese during World War II. But the sexual exploitation of other women continued in South Korea long after Japan’s colonial rule ended in 1945, and it was facilitated by their own government. Social News: BeReal is Making a Feed of Just Famous People

BeReal is really in the news lately: The Verge reports that the photo-sharing app, which has grown in popularity as an anti-Instagram marketing itself as “Your friends for real,” is releasing a feature focusing on famous strangers. The new feed, called RealPeople, is a “curated timeline of the world’s most interesting people” that features “an ever-changing collection” of high-profile people from around the globe. BeReal says the feed shows that celebrities are regular humans. “RealPeople isn’t about influencing, amassing likes or comments, or promoting brands,” the app notes.
