Swiss photographer Werner Bischof is best known for his post-war photojournalism, but an unearthed archive of his color work may change and enrich his legacy. Werner Bischof was always considered a classical black-and-white photographer of the 20th century,” the artist’s son, curator and director Marco Bischof, notes at the British Journal of Phiotography. “Now, with these pictures we have to reorientate the compass.” The work is on view through July 16 at the Museo d’arte della Svizzera italianain Lugano, Switzerland.

Committee to Protect Journalists Wednesday May 10, 2023
Eleven people were arrested Monday night after protesters clashed with police during a Manhattan demonstration over the subway chokehold death of a man, Jordan Neely. Among those taken into custody was freelance photojournalist Stephanie Keith, who was accused of interfering with the police. The Committee to Protect Journalists later issued a statement calling for charges against Keith to be dropped. “Arresting reporters is a crude form of censorship and limits the public’s ability to access information about current events,” noted a spokesman for the press freedom group. When Russia invaded Ukraine last year, James Nachtwey packed up his cameras and Kevlar vest and rushed to the frontlines. One of the most acclaimed photojournalists of all time, Nachtwey is now 75, but as he noted on a recent edition of 60 Minutes, he is not stopping. In terms of cruelty, says the photographer who has wounded by a bomb in El Salvador, a mortar in Beirut, and a grenade in Iraq, “Somehow the Russians have stood apart, and not only in Ukraine, but in Chechnya.”
