The people at LensVid have taken a deep dive into camera-sales data covering the period from 2007 until 2022 to see just how camera buying trends have changed over the last 15 years. The results of the study, notes DIY Photography, offer a few surprises. The total number of cameras has obviously gone down over the last decade or so. But the numbers possibly aren’t quite as bad as they might look once you start to dig a little beyond the overall camera sales. There’s been a big shift in the types of cameras that are being sold.

The 2023 Audubon Photography Awards competition is accepting entries through March 1 — including submissions for the Female Bird Prize. To stoke interest, Audubon editors have chosen some favorite female bird shots from the 2022 contest, including John Ruggeri’s shot of a snail kite. The category was created to call attention to female birds, which have generally been overlooked by researchers … and photographers. That lack of focus on the specific needs of female birds has profound consequences for species conservation, notes Audubon.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, which perhaps explains why Meta is rolling out a subscription service that will allow Instagram and Facebook users to pay to get verified. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg – “still stinging from his botched metaverse launch,” notes Business Insider – recently unveiled Meta Verified, a new subscription service costing $12 on web and $15 on iOS and Android. The feature offers Facebook and Instagram users access to verification, additional security – and perhaps most importantly, boosts their visibility and reach on the platforms. Elon Musk’s troubled Twitter is doing something similar. CNN has more.
