India’s newest and perhaps most ambitious institution, the Museum of Art and Photography, opened on February 18 in Bengaluru (Bangalore), the city known as India’s Silicon Valley, notes Artnet. Founded by businessman and collector Abhishek Poddar, the museum offers what GQ magazine calls “a digital-friendly, interactive experience.” Says Poddar: “I’d be lying if I said I know what our strategy is for the next five or ten years because I didn’t know where I was going at any step of the way. I just had this [idea] that I had to do a museum.”

In 2022, it seemed BeReal was the app of the moment: Founded in 2020 by French entrepreneurs Alexis Barreyat and Kévin Perreau, the app swelled in success, reaching over 50 million downloads by October, as many people grew increasingly frustrated with Instagram’s shift toward video. (Predictably, Meta has begun testing a BeReal-style ‘Roll Call’ feature in Messenger.) But now, notes Mashable, the app’s popularity is waning. BeReal was estimated to have hit 20 million daily active users in October 2022; that has almost halved to 10.4 million daily active users, adds PetaPixel.

Underwater Photographer of the Year Friday February 24, 2023
American photographer Kat Zhou is the top winner of the 2023 Underwater Photographer of the Year competition for her photo “Boto Encantado”—a shot of an Amazon river dolphin. “There’s a legend among locals that river dolphins, or ‘botos,’ can transform into handsome men known as ‘boto encantado’ to seduce women,” Zhou notes. “Though I did not witness the transformation, I was enchanted by these beautiful mammals in a different way.” This year’s competition brought in more than 6,000 submissions from photographers in 72 countries, adds Colossal.
