Exhibitions: Portraits from the UK's First AIDS Ward

Opened by Princess Diana in 1987, the Broderip Ward at the Middlesex Hospital in Fitzrovia, London, was the first ward dedicated to the care and treatment of people affected by HIV/AIDS in the U.K. In 1993, the acclaimed photographer Gideon Mendel photographed patients there to show “how patients and staff transformed the constraints of hospital life and what a terminal ward could be,” notes AnOther. Thirty years later, Mendel’s images are on view in “The Ward – Revisited,” an exhibition at The Fitzrovia Chapel in London.   Read the full Story >>

A black bear in Colorado made news recently when took some 400 selfies with a motion-activated wildlife camera set up by the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks department to learn more about the local fauna. Spotlight: Tyre Nichols Was a Photographer

Before Tyre Nichols died after police beat him following a traffic stop in Memphis, he was a teenager who made skateboarding videos with his friends in Sacramento. A video report at CNN lets you see the world as he saw it. “Ty lived in the moment,” says his friend Ryan Wilson. “I met him at the local skate park; he was just dropping in, cruising around, and to me, I was like, 'Oh my gosh, this guy’s amazing.'” Capturing the moment, says Wilson, was one of the things Tyre was “very passionate about.”   Read the full Story >>

Followup: Photo Curator Pleads Not Guilty to Child Pornography Charges

Writer, photography curator, and painter Efrem Zelony-Mindell has pleaded not guilty to charges of child pornography and attempted enticement of a minor after being arrested by the FBI last month, reports Art News. Zelony-Mindell allegedly attempted to engage in sexual activity with a 9-year-old boy using the messaging platform Telegram. Zelony-Mindell has written about art and photography for publications like HuffPost, DEAR DAVE, VICE, and, aCurator. “Since news of the arrest, artists have been distraught at being associated with Zelony-Mindell,” notes AN.   Read the full Story >>
