The Center for Photography at Woodstock has purchased a historic, four-story former cigar factory building in Kingston, New York, to serve as its future headquarters. The Center, which for 45 years was located in nearby Woodstock, in New York's Hudson Valley, is a leading venue for the presentation, teaching, and critical discussion of photography. It will use the 40,000 square-foot space in Kingston to stage exhibitions, conduct workshops, screen films, present lectures, and hold community gatherings.

George Zimbel, a photographer who often captured ordinary people doing ordinary things, but whose two best-known subjects were megastars, died on Jan. 9 in Montreal, reports The New York Times. He was 93. In 1954, he photographed Marilyn Monroe on Lexington Avenue and 52nd Street in Manhattan, her skirt being blown upward during the filming of a scene for director Billy Wilder’s “The Seven Year Itch.” During the 1960 presidential campaign, he famously photographed John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline, as they greeted the crowd from an open convertible during a ticker-tape parade in Manhattan.

Despite war, the winter tradition of plunging into icy rivers continues in Ukraine, notes NPR in a report featuring photos from Claire Harbage. The Christian holiday of Epiphany celebrates the baptism of Jesus Christ, though the annual ice swim's religious ties are loose. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine has been vocal in its objections to it, including in a recent Facebook post that said, "there is no religious reason for the immersion in winter water and never has been.” Said one plunger, “Of course, it doesn't feel like a holiday this year.”
