Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger are back: The Instagram co-founders, who walked away from their creation in 2018, six years after it was acquired by Facebook, have formed a new venture to explore ideas for next-gen social apps, notes Platformer. Their first product is Artifact, a personalized news feed that uses machine learning to understand the interests of users and allows them to discuss articles with friends. Honor Roll: Garden Photographer of the Year Winners

U.K.-based photographer Tony North is the overall winner of the 2023 International Garden Photographer of the Year competition for his image “Blue Tajinaste,” a dramatic landscape (and skyscape) taken on the island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands. The image, which was also the winner of the Breathing Spaces category, “excels in highlighting plant life on our planet,” noted the judges. Legal Brief: Getty Images Sues Stable Diffusion for a $1.8 Trillion Over Copyright Infringement

The rise of AI has raised legal questions, and the stakes are growing exponentially: The Verge reports that Getty Images has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. against Stability AI, creators of open-source AI art generator Stable Diffusion, alleging “brazen” intellectual property theft on a “staggering scale.” Getty claims that Stability AI copied more than 12 million images from its database “without permission ... or compensation" to train it image generator and is seeking up to $150,000 per infringement, or up to $1.8 trillion. On Assignment: Chandler Borries Ascends the Dolomites for outdoor apparel and equipment company Arc'teryx
