Nan Goldin’s life as a photographer and activist is the focus of the Oscar-nominated documentary All The Beauty and the Bloodshed. But the artist, who has said that photography is a way to “make bearable the things that felt unbearable,” is also the subject of a major exhibition at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, which has also awarded her the Käthe Kollwitz Prize. In Focus: Rescue and Recovery in Turkey and Syria

The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck southern Turkey and northwestern Syria this week has climbed past 21,000.
