Addendum: Elian Gonzalez, Boy in Famous Photo, Is Now a Cuban Lawmaker

On Thanksgiving Day 1999, Elián González, then six years old, shot to fame after he was rescued from a rickety boat in the Florida straits. His mother drowned in her attempt to bring her son to the U.S. from Cuba. A custody battle followed, with the U.S. finally agreeing to send the boy back to his father in Cuba. Associated Press photographer Alan Diaz won a Pulitzer Prize for his picture of an armed U.S. immigration agent confronting the young boy. Honor Roll: British Press Photography Winners

The British Press Photographers Association has announced the winners of this year’s BPPA Press Photographer of the Year Awards, which  showcase photography taken for, and used by, the UK media. The overall winner is Hannah McKay of Reuters, who took first place in the news category with a portfolio that included a shot of Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, along with Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis appearing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
