Passings: Joyce Dopkeen, Barrier-Breaking News Photographer, Dies at 80

Joyce Dopkeen, who in 1973 became the first woman to be hired by The New York Times as a full-time staff photographer, beginning a 35-year career with the newspaper, died on Jan. 31, in Rockville, Md, reports the newspaper. She was 80. Dopkeen roamed widely with her camera for The Times, whether capturing Muhammad Ali squaring off against Joe Frazier, female prison inmates training puppies to be service dogs, and exuberant children enjoying summers in urban parks, notes The Times.   Read the full Story >>

“For Ming Smith, photography is where the senses and the spirit collide through the prism of light, a process she has compared to ‘getting that precise moment…getting the feeling…like the blues.’” So notes New York’s Museum of Modern Art, which features the exhibition “Projects: Ming Smith” through May 29. Smith was the first Black woman photographer to have her work acquired by MoMA, adds The New York Times Magazine. “I didn’t care if I fit in. Four years after one small Southern California city was overrun by tourists hoping to catch a glimpse of that year's poppy super bloom, officials are issuing a clear message: stay away from this year's anticipated super bloom, or face arrest. In 2019, tens of thousands of visitors showed up every day in Lake Elsinore, 90 minutes east of Los Angeles, to see and photograph hillsides blanketed with orange, yellow and purple flowers. “They trampled on the very habitat that they placed so high in regard and sought to enjoy,” said Lake Elsinore Mayor Natasha Johnson. Media Watch: An AI-Generated Cover...On a Photo Magazine

A French photography magazine has sparked controversy by publishing an AI-generated image on its cover to show how difficult it's becoming to tell the difference between an authentic photo and one created by artificial intelligence. The magazine,  Réponses Photo, didn’t state on the cover that the image was AI-generated, but it did include an article inside that revealed the photo was created with Midjourney, notes Digital Camera World.
