Jacqueline Bates, the founding photography director of The California Sunday Magazine, is joining The New York Times as the new photo director for its Opinion section. “She and the photo team in Opinion will keep working to define and maintain a visual identity for Opinion photography that feels significantly different from that of the news report while also ensuring that it is aesthetically striking, and infused with conceptual clarity and a distinctive point of view,” notes the newspaper. Under Bates’s direction, California Sunday won the National Magazine Award for photography in 2016 and 2017.

Warned that Russia was planning an attack on Kyiv, photojournalist Heidi Levine writes at The Washington Post that she “slept in my clothes, phone and laptop by my pillow, with Sofia, the kitten I adopted in southeastern Ukraine a month ago, cuddled by my side.” An hour after she awoke, sounds of explosions sent a flock of pigeons into flight. She notes in her article how she went to the site of the drone attack and was on a hotel rooftop when a second “double-tap” attack came—one meant to target first responders.

Market research company Fact.MR has released a study showing that the commercial photography sector is growing, largely because of a surging e-commerce industry. The global commercial photography market is expected to reach a valuation of $ 6.4 billion by the end of 2032, up from its current size of $ 5.2 billion, expanding at a CAGR of 2.2% over the next ten years, notes company. “Since it is a modern tool that enhances the business image and makes enterprises stand out differently from competitors, commercial photography is here to stay,” Fact.MR states.
