Passings: Sonia Handelman Meyer, Socially Conscious Photographer, Dies at 102

Sonia Handelman Meyer, whose memorable black-and-white street photography around New York City in the 1940s and 1950s reflected her training at the Photo League, a left-leaning collective of photographers who believed their work could change poor social conditions, died on Sept. 11 at her home in Charlotte, N.C., notes The New York Times. She was 102. “When you go out on the street and you see things, they don’t seem to have an impact,” she told The Times in 2011. “But after you begin to work with a camera and have the discussions we had in class, you see details.”   Read the full Story >>

Honor Roll: Headless Cats? That's a Comedy Pet Photo Winner!

Summer is over and the silly season has arrived with the unveiling of the winners of this year’s Comedy Pet Photo Awards, a cousin to the popular Comedy Wildlife Photo Awards. This year’s winner is Kenichi Morinaga with his photo of two cats sitting on a fence in a way that makes them appear both headless and connected at the neck. The photo beat out about 2,000 other entries. Morinaga, from Japan, often visits small islands around his country, where he photographs street cats. Tech News: Is the Sony FX30 the New Cine Cam to Beat?

Eighteen months ago, Sony released the full-frame Sony FX3—a compact cinema camera based on much of the same tech found in the Sony a7S III. Now the company has announced the new Sony FX30, which, notes DIY Photography, is essentially an APS-C (or Super 35mm) version of the FX3. With the smaller sensor comes a slightly smaller price tag, bringing that FX3 cost down from around $3,900 to only $1,798 for the FX30. Trending: Tyler Mitchell Makes TIME's "100 Next" List

Time magazine has released its “TIME100 Next 2022” compendium—a list of “emerging leaders from around the world who are shaping the future and defining the next generation of leadership.” This includes a category of “Phenoms,” one of which is photographer Tyler Mitchell, who in 2018 made history by becoming the first Black person to photograph Vogue magazine’s cover.
