The first video from Rob Cottle and Geraint Radford—principles of YouTube channel “The Outsiders”—is a joy to watch, declares Fstoppers. The video follows Rob and Geraint as they visit a large pond, somewhere in South Wales, “to drink coffee, eat biscuits, talk nonsense and sometimes point a camera at a critter.” You don’t have to go to a remote pond for photographic fun, they note: “Adding a water feature to your garden will bring so much life and photographic potential, even a good-sized lined pot can house something like water iris and a few bog plants bringing with them all manner of bugs and where there’s bugs, there’s birds,” they note.   Read the full Story >>

Spotlight: Battling Obesity, and Bullies

“I’ve always been overweight,” says Shannon Walton, who lives in Sheffield, England. In primary school, Walton was diagnosed with premature adrenarche, meaning her body began to develop much earlier than her peers. She later learned she has polycystic ovary syndrome, which leads to weight gain. At school, she suffered from bullying, until she decided she’d had enough, notes CNN. Art News: Shoair Mavlian Is the New Director of the Photographers' Gallery

Shoair Mavlian has been appointed as the new director of The Photographers’ Gallery in London, 14 years after she worked there as an intern, notes The Art Newspaper. Currently the director of the Brighton-based charitable organization Photoworks and a former photography curator at the Tate Modern, Mavlian will replace Brett Rogers, who led TPG for 16 years.  Founded in 1971 by Sue Davies, The Photographers’ Gallery was the UK’s first public gallery devoted to photography. Honor Roll: Weather Photographer of the Year Winners

Weather Photographer of the Year   Wednesday October 19, 2022

The Royal Meteorological Society has announced the winners of its annual Weather Photographer of the Year competition, conducted in association with AccuWeather. The top prize goes to photographer Christopher Ison for his photo “Storm Eunice,” which was taken in in the UK last year. “When the storm was predicted, and it was carrying the first ever red warning for the south coast, I knew I had to find a spot to record it,!” Ison says. “I got there reasonably early to find many photographers already drenched in rain and seawater.”   Read the full Story >>
